Cosmos Branding Audit — 8 May 2026 (evening)¶
Triggered by Sush's 8 May Plain AI brand-positioning correction (
museum of AI→AI explained plainly, for everyone). Pattern question: "is each planet's manifest tagline still the placeholder/early-design language, or does it reflect the real value the planet now offers?" Answer: 5 of 7 manifest taglines lag the actual offering. This audit captures every drift surface so the corrections can ship in one commit-set.
How to use this doc
- Each planet section has: current state · evidence (hero + About) · verdict · recommended new tagline · supporting language already in production.
- Sush picks one tagline per planet (or proposes a different one).
- The fix shape is identical to the 8 May Plain AI fix: 5 manifest mirrors + cross-reference cosmos doc descriptions, all in one commit-set per repo.
- Skip: Plain AI is already fixed (commit-set
fa4ea981etc.).
Headline finding¶
The manifest taglines lag behind reality. 5 of 7 planets have richer, more specific descriptions already in production on their own About pages and cross-planet cosmos maps — but the canonical manifest still uses early/generic placeholders.
This means anyone hovering a cosmos rail chip on any sibling planet sees the worst version of the tagline (the manifest), while the same planet's own About page proudly uses the better version. We have the language already; the manifest just needs to catch up.
Methodology¶
For each planet I read:
- Manifest tagline in
aguidetocloud-revamp/data/planets.toml(canonical, mirrored to 4 others) - Hero
<h1>+ deck/sub on the planet's homepage - Hero / OG description (the meta description shipped to Twitter/LinkedIn/Google)
- About page lede (where one exists)
- Cross-references on other planets: CMD About cosmos map, Agentic About
cosmosMaparray, Claw AboutcosmosMaparray — these often have richer wording than the manifest
And compared against:
- Sush's voice fingerprints (
voice-and-tone.md): plain English, honest take, no marketing words - The actual content the planet currently offers (page counts, features, audience)
- What language the planet's owner — Sush — uses elsewhere (YouTube descriptions, blog posts, hero copy)
Verdict summary¶
| # | Planet | Manifest tagline | Verdict | Recommended new tagline (sourced from production) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🌍 Earth | the home — certs, tools, mind maps |
🟡 Understated. Misses blog (200+ posts) + videos (100K YouTube subs) — the two biggest surfaces. | free cloud + AI guides for IT pros — tools, certs, blog, videos |
| 1a | 🌑 Guided | cert prep — affordable practice exams |
🔴 "Affordable" is weak; misses the actual brand promise. Hero h1 says "practice exams that don't gatekeep" — that's the spine. The free study guides aren't mentioned. | practice exams that don't gatekeep — $9, not $79 (matches CMD About cosmos map + Agentic About cosmosMap + the planet's own hero) |
| 2 | 🪐 CMD (formerly Brain Bar) | Microsoft jargon decoder |
🟡 Understated. Hero literally says "the microsoft jargon AND error code decoder" — manifest drops the error-codes half. | Microsoft jargon AND error code decoder (matches the planet's own home prelude + CMD About) |
| 3 | 🪐 Shift | the AI job-change wire |
✅ On-brand. Newspaper register, accurate. | (no change needed) — optionally: the AI job-change wire — 35 roles, role by role |
| 4 | 🪐 Plain AI | AI explained plainly, for everyone |
✅ CORRECTED 8 May 2026 evening. | (no change — already done) |
| 5 | 🪐 Agentic | agent cockpit — for techies building with agents |
🟡 Generic. Doesn't say what's actually IN it. The description has the gold: "MCP reviews, recipes, vendor takes." | MCP reviews, recipes, vendor takes — for techies building with agents (sourced from the planet's OG description + sub copy) |
| 6 | 🪐 Claw | OpenClaw study reference — plain English |
✅ Accurate (slightly understated). | (no change needed) — optionally: OpenClaw study reference — concepts, plugins, security, plain English |
Recommended changes: 4 of 7 planets (Earth, Guided, CMD, Agentic). Shift + Claw stay; Plain AI already done.
✅ AUDIT EXECUTED — 8 May 2026 evening
All 4 recommended manifest taglines shipped same evening. 6-repo commit-set: 0775fefc (aguidetocloud-revamp) · 0e27dc4 (guided) · 7f67585 (shift) · 9ac968e (agentic-planet) · 4342063 (claw-planet) · 80b4845 (plainai). Plus learning-docs cosmos doc descriptions caught up. Plus the Agentic + Claw About cosmosMap slug-fix side finding (slug cmd → brainbar) shipped in the same commit-set. Drift audit exits 0. Hugo + mkdocs build clean.
The audit pattern (compare manifest tagline against hero h1 + OG meta + cross-planet About cosmosMap) is reusable. Repeat after any major content shift.
Per-planet detail¶
1 · 🌍 Earth — aguidetocloud.com¶
Current manifest tagline: the home — certs, tools, mind maps
Hero <h1>: "Cloud & AI shouldn't feel this hard."
Hero supporting copy: "I work in cloud and AI at Microsoft NZ. In my head, I'm still the curious intern — figuring it out for myself first, simplifying it until it actually clicks. What overflows lands here. Guides, practice exams, free tools, videos. For people like us."
Hugo description meta: "Free cloud, AI & Microsoft 365 tools, tutorials and cert study guides for IT pros. 56 interactive tools including AI News, Copilot Readiness, ROI Calculator, Advanced Prompt Lab & more."
Hugo tagline: Free Cloud, AI & Microsoft 365 Tools for IT Pros
Drift: 🟡 Understated. Earth has: - 56 interactive tools - 9+ cert paths with free study guides - 66 mind maps - 200+ blog posts - 100K+ YouTube subs (2 channels: main + Bites) - The full Zen design system + cosmos foundation
The manifest tagline mentions only 3 of these (certs, tools, mind maps). Blog and videos are huge surfaces and they're missing.
Recommended new tagline candidates (Sush picks):
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
A. free cloud + AI guides for IT pros — tools, certs, blog, videos |
Echoes the Hugo description; mentions all 4 main surfaces |
B. cloud, AI & Microsoft 365 — for people like us |
Tightest; uses the existing brand phrase "for people like us"; less concrete |
C. the home — tools, certs, blog, videos, mind maps |
Keeps the "home" framing; expands the surface list |
D. your cloud & AI study companion — free tools, free guides, free videos |
Pricing-as-feature; matches Sush's anti-gatekeeping voice |
Recommendation: A — it carries the most signal at chip-aria-label size + matches what Sush already wrote in hugo.toml.
1a · 🌑 Guided — aguidetocloud.com/guided/¶
Current manifest tagline: cert prep — affordable practice exams
Hero <h1>: "practice exams that don't gatekeep."
Hero description meta: "$9 per cert, not $79. Free study guides forever. {N} certs across {vendors} and more. Every answer explained — why it's right and why the others aren't."
Cross-references that already use richer language:
- CMD About cosmos map (line 77):
moon · cert prep · $9 not $79 - Agentic About cosmosMap (line 11):
cert prep that doesn't gatekeep — $9, not $79 - Claw About cosmosMap (line 12):
cert prep that doesn't gatekeep — $9, not $79
Drift: 🔴 "Affordable" is weak marketing-speak. It doesn't carry Sush's actual brand promise (anti-gatekeeping). It also drops the price point — which is the most concrete part of Guided's value. The manifest is the WORST version of the tagline that exists in production. Three other surfaces already use the better wording.
Recommended new tagline: practice exams that don't gatekeep — $9, not $79
Reasons:
1. Matches the planet's own <h1>
2. Already in use on Agentic + Claw About pages (production)
3. Carries the brand promise (anti-gatekeeping) + the concrete value ($9)
4. Plain English, no marketing words
Optional alternatives:
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
practice exams that don't gatekeep — $9, free study guides forever |
Adds the free-guides surface |
$9 practice exams + free study guides forever |
Pricing-first |
cert prep that doesn't gatekeep — $9, not $79 |
Variant: starts with "cert prep" framing |
2 · 🪐 CMD (formerly Brain Bar) — cmd.aguidetocloud.com¶
Current manifest tagline: Microsoft jargon decoder
Hero prelude: "cmd — the microsoft jargon AND error code decoder"
Hero <h1>: "stop googling microsoft."
Capability line: "// type a microsoft term · open a portal · decode AADSTS50105 · all in plain english"
Cross-references that use richer language:
- CMD's own About cosmos map (line 80):
the microsoft jargon AND error code decoder - Agentic About cosmosMap (line 12):
Microsoft jargon decoder · plus error codes - Claw About cosmosMap (line 13):
Microsoft jargon decoder · plus error codes
Drift: 🟡 Understated — drops "AND error code decoder". The error-codes half is half the brand. CMD literally decodes things like AADSTS50105 (Azure AD signin error codes), not just acronyms. This is in the planet's own home prelude already.
Recommended new tagline: Microsoft jargon AND error code decoder
Reasons: 1. Matches the planet's own home prelude exactly 2. Carries both halves of the actual offering 3. Plain English, no marketing words 4. Tight enough for chip aria-labels
Optional alternative: Microsoft jargon decoder · plus error codes (matches Agentic + Claw About cosmos maps; more legible at small sizes due to the · separator)
3 · 🪐 Shift — shift.aguidetocloud.com¶
Current manifest tagline: the AI job-change wire
Hero <h1>: "How fast is your job changing?"
Hero deck: "How AI is changing 35 different jobs — designers, teachers, lawyers, doctors, accountants, more. What it's taking over. What it's changing. What stays human. With sources. No fluff. No doom. No signup."
Cross-references:
- CMD About cosmos map (line 82-83):
how ai is changing real jobs/the AI job-change wire · 35 role dispatches - Agentic About cosmosMap (line 13):
how AI is changing real jobs, role by role - Claw About cosmosMap (line 14):
how AI is changing real jobs, role by role
Drift: ✅ None. "The AI job-change wire" is on-brand for the newspaper register, accurate to the offering, and tight.
Recommendation: keep as-is.
Optional polish if Sush wants more concrete: the AI job-change wire — 35 roles, role by role (adds the count + matches Agentic/Claw About wording)
4 · 🪐 Plain AI — plainai.aguidetocloud.com¶
Status: ✅ CORRECTED 8 May 2026 evening. Tagline is now AI explained plainly, for everyone. Visual register stays. See Cosmos Phase 6+ Roadmap § 8 May 2026 evening — Plain AI brand-positioning correction for the full record.
No further changes needed in this audit.
5 · 🪐 Agentic — agents.aguidetocloud.com¶
Current manifest tagline: agent cockpit — for techies building with agents
Hero <h1>: "A field guide for building with agents."
Hero sub: "Vendor docs are pitch. Hacker News is a lottery. This is the cockpit: honest MCP reviews, side-by-side vendor takes, and recipes with measured numbers. Plain English. Built by an engineer who deploys this for a living."
OG description: "Tools, MCPs, recipes, and honest reviews for techies building with agents. Plain English. No vendor spin."
Cross-references:
- CMD About cosmos map (line 88-89):
cockpit field guide for techies/honest MCP reviews · vendor takes · recipes
Drift: 🟡 Generic — describes the audience but not what's IN the cockpit. The planet's own hero sub + OG description list the actual stuff (MCP reviews, recipes, vendor takes, side-by-side compares). The manifest doesn't.
Plus: "agent cockpit — for techies building with agents" repeats "agent". Sush's voice rules avoid that.
Recommended new tagline candidates (Sush picks):
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
A. MCP reviews, recipes, vendor takes — for techies building with agents |
Sourced from CMD About cosmos map + the OG description; lists the actual goods |
B. the cockpit — MCP reviews, vendor honesty, recipes |
Starts with the cockpit metaphor; tight |
C. honest MCP reviews, recipes, vendor takes — for techies |
Drops "building with agents" (already implicit from the domain agents.aguidetocloud.com) |
D. cockpit field guide for techies — MCP, recipes, vendor takes |
Hybrid: keeps "field guide for techies" + adds the goods |
Recommendation: A — most concrete, matches the planet's own home and the production CMD About cross-reference.
6 · 🪐 Claw — claw.aguidetocloud.com¶
Current manifest tagline: OpenClaw study reference — plain English
OG description: "A plain-English study reference for the OpenClaw agent runtime. Concepts, setup paths, connections, plugin field notes, use-case recipes, security gotchas, comparisons. Independent guide by Sush — sourced where we have not run it ourselves yet."
Cross-references:
- CMD About cosmos map (line 91-92):
plain-English OpenClaw study reference/§-numbered sections · sourced field notes - Agentic About cosmosMap (line 16):
plain-English study reference for OpenClaw
Drift: ✅ Accurate (slightly understated — doesn't list the actual sections but neither does Plain AI's tagline).
Recommendation: keep as-is.
Optional polish if Sush wants more concrete: plain-English OpenClaw study reference — concepts, plugins, security (matches the OG description's first 3 sections)
Cross-reference drift (separate from manifest)¶
The Agentic + Claw About cosmosMap arrays use slug 'cmd' for CMD, but the canonical manifest slug is 'brainbar'. This is a slight drift surface — if either About page ever uses the slug to look up an icon (cosmos rail Icon component, OG generator, etc.), the lookup will miss.
Files:
- agentic-planet/src/pages/about.astro line 12: { slug: 'cmd', ... } → should be { slug: 'brainbar', ... }
- claw-planet/src/pages/about.astro line 13: same
Verdict: 🟡 Low-priority drift. Currently no functional impact (the array is used for display only — slug is rendered as a data-slug= attribute but no icon lookup). Worth fixing for consistency next time those files are edited.
Recommended fix order (when Sush picks taglines)¶
For each manifest tagline change, the same commit-set pattern as the Plain AI fix:
- Update tagline in 5 manifest mirrors (canonical TOML + 4 JSON mirrors)
- Update CMD About cosmos map (Hugo, the only doc with a verbose ASCII map)
- Update Agentic About
cosmosMaparray (when changing CMD or other slugs Agentic references) - Update Claw About
cosmosMaparray (same) - Update cosmos doc descriptions in learning-docs:
docs/cosmos/index.md(planet table)docs/reference/cosmos-philosophy.md(planet table)docs/reference/cosmos-audit.md(Phase 1 planet table)- per-planet
docs/cosmos/<slug>/index.md(description, identity table) - Run
mkdocs build --strict(exit 0) +node scripts/cosmos-drift-audit.mjs(exit 0) - Pull-rebase + push per repo
Total commit-set per tagline change: typically 3-5 repos depending on which planet's About-page references are affected.
Hand-off¶
This is the audit. The fixes ship after Sush picks per-planet taglines.
Open question for Sush, in priority order:
- Earth tagline — pick A/B/C/D (or propose your own)
- Guided tagline — confirm "practice exams that don't gatekeep — $9, not $79" or pick alternate
- CMD tagline — confirm "Microsoft jargon AND error code decoder" or pick alternate (with
·separator?) - Agentic tagline — pick A/B/C/D (or propose your own)
- Shift — keep as-is, or add the "35 roles" version?
- Claw — keep as-is, or add the "concepts, plugins, security" version?
Once picks are in, the next session will execute the same shape of commit-set as the 8 May Plain AI fix (~7 repos, all parallel-safe with explicit-paths discipline).
Audit complete: 8 May 2026 evening, ~30 min after the Plain AI brand-positioning correction shipped. Universe still drift-clean (cosmos-drift-audit.mjs exits 0). Same audit pattern as voice-drift-2026-05-08.md and logo-audit-2026-05-08.md. Re-audit cadence: after each major content/positioning shift, before each round of cosmos-doc work.
